Online Notarization Prevents Fraudulent Signings

June 28, 2022

When signing a document remotely, each signer who is unknown to the notary is required to undergo an online identity screening in accordance with Florida Law.  This identity screening consists of the following:

  1. The signer uploading a picture of their State issued Driver License, Identification Card or U.S. Passport;
  2. The signer answering 4 out 5 security questions accurately in two minutes or less.  These security questions can go as far as 30 years into the signer’s history/public records.
  3. The signer must adopt an electronic signature.

Once the signer successfully completes the screening, they are connected to the notary using audio and video communication, which is then recorded and retained by the notary and/or platform used to perform the notarization for a minimum of 10 years after the notarization.

Due to the stringent requirements for unknown signers, online identity screening and appearance of the signer before a recorded audio and video during the notarization, this eliminates the ability of individuals to commit fraud when signing a document remotely before a Florida Notary Public.
